How to choose the right belt?

Choosing a transmission belt isn't just about the length. For reliable performance and a long service life, the belt must match the type of drive, the pulley profile, the load, and the operating environment. Here are the most important criteria.

Type of drive

Classical V-belts are suitable for general-purpose drives; for drives with sudden load changes, use banded belts (Multibelt); for smooth gear ratio adjustment — VARISPEED variable speed belts; for high speeds and small pulley diameters — poly-V belts; and for non-standard lengths — timing belts by the metre.

Profile and cross-section

The profile must match the pulley groove exactly — classical (Z, A, B, C, D, E), narrow cogged (SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC), banded (3V/5V/8V), poly-V (J, K, L), or timing (XL, L, H, 5M, 8M, 14M, T5, T10, T20, AT5, AT10, AT20). The different cross-sections are not interchangeable.

Belt length

The length (outside or pitch length) must match the center distance between the shafts and the pulley diameters. Measure the old belt or calculate the center distance before ordering.

Power and speed of the drive

For higher transmitted power or sudden load changes, banded Multibelt belts are suitable, and for especially high loads — the reinforced Advance (polyester cord) or Power (aramid cord) versions.

Operating temperature and environment

Different constructions withstand different temperature ranges — from -40°C to +90°C depending on the type (standard V-belts, Multibelt Advance/Power, VARISPEED, poly-V). Confirm the operating conditions before choosing the type and brand of belt.

Reversing drives and idler pulleys

For reversing drives, dual-sided belts (profiles AA, BB, CC) are suitable, while for drives with an idler pulley on the belt's back, the reinforced Multibelt Advance/Power versions or poly-V belts, designed for back-idler operation, are the right choice.

Smooth gear ratio adjustment

For variators and drives with smoothly changing speed, VARISPEED variable speed belts with a reinforced polyester tension cord are used, rated from -30°C to +90°C.

Non-standard length or installation without dismantling

For a non-standard center distance or when the shafts cannot be dismantled, choose a polyurethane timing belt by the metre, which is cut and welded on site to the exact length.
